About Prairie Strides

Prairie Strides Inc. has been supporting children with disabilities since 1977 through adaptive programs that build confidence, connection, and physical development. We deliver structured adaptive horse-riding programs in the Spring and Fall, along with an inclusive, flexible Summer Program that supports physical activity, confidence, and social connection, both at and beyond the barn.

We serve children ages 5 to 15 who live with a wide range of disabilities, including cerebral palsy, autism, visual impairments, and other developmental challenges. At the heart of Prairie Strides is the powerful relationship between rider and horse, a connection that creates a unique environment where children can build balance, strength, coordination, and self-confidence, while also developing social and emotional skills in a supportive, encouraging setting.

Our Spring and Fall adaptive horse-riding programs are delivered at West Wind Stables and run over 10 weeks, with twice-weekly classes. Each class is carefully planned and led by trained instructors, and supported by dedicated volunteers who ensure every rider receives individualized attention and care.

The impact of Prairie Strides reaches far beyond the barn. Families regularly share how participation leads to noticeable improvements in their child’s confidence, communication, and physical abilities, with positive effects carrying into school, home, and daily life.

We believe every child deserves opportunities to grow, build confidence, and feel a sense of belonging. At Prairie Strides, adaptive horse-riding is more than an activity, it is a meaningful pathway to inclusion, independence, and joy. With the support of our community, we continue to make strides, one ride at a time.

“Over the past four years, Ethan has thrived in the program, eagerly returning to the stables each week. The dedicated volunteers have not only taught him valuable skills but also provided a nurturing environment for his emotional growth. We are immensely grateful for the transformation it has brought to our family.”
